Why we lost Anambra, FCT polls – Aregbesola

The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has explained why his party failed to win the November 25, 2025 Anambra State governorship election and the February 26, 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections.

Aregbesola made the disclosure on Tuesday during the ongoing ADC national convention.

He admitted that while external factors played a major role in the party’s defeat, internal challenges also contributed significantly to the losses.

“Our party participated in the 2025 Anambra State and the February 26 FCT local government election. We were not victorious for various reasons, including the fact that our opponents employed the power of incumbency, monetization of the electoral process and misuse of state power,” he said.

“On our side, we suffered from poor funding and the general non-readiness of our structure.”Aregbesola, however, expressed optimism, stating that the party has learnt valuable lessons from the defeats and is now better prepared for future contests.

“However, we have learnt from these lessons and are ready for the forthcoming Ekiti and Osun states governorship elections,” he added.

In the FCT Area Council elections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) won five out of six seats, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) securing the remaining one. The ADC failed to clinch any seat.

The remarks come as the ADC continues to position itself as a viable opposition platform ahead of future elections.
