Why 2026 AMVCA may be the last - Mildred Okwo

Mildred Okwo, the Nigerian filmmaker, has speculated that the upcoming edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) may be the last.

In a post on X on Monday, Okwo, who was nominated for the ‘Best Director’ award at the 4th AMVCA, questioned the future of the prestigious awards platform.

“I will be very surprised if this AMVCA is not the farewell edition,” she wrote

In a follow-up response to another X user, Okwo argued that the awards may struggle to retain financial backing under new ownership.

She cast doubt on whether the new custodians would be willing to sustain a show that does not generate a significant return on investment (ROI) within the first few years of acquiring the business.

“I doubt the new owners will be interested in shows that don’t make serious ROI in the first few years of buying the business,” she said.

“It costs a lot of money to produce that show. Just makes good business sense unless they decide to use it as tax write off…”

Okwo is a film director and producer whose movies have received several awards in Africa.

She, alongside eleven other Nollywood practitioners, founded the Nigerian Oscars Selection Committee (NOSC). The committee was approved by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to screen Nigerian films for the ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ category at the Academy Awards.

The filmmaker’s concerns come at a time when MultiChoice Group, organisers of the AMVCA, discontinued Showmax, its streaming platform.

The development also comes months after Canal+ Group, a French TV channel, took over MultiChoice, the South African pay-TV operator.

Last month, the AMVCA unveiled its nominees for the 12th edition scheduled for May 9, 2026, in Lagos.
