The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has assured Nigerians that measures are underway to make more affordable smartphones available in the market, addressing the rising cost of Android devices.
Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Aminu Maida, disclosed this while speaking on efforts to deepen digital inclusion and expand connectivity across the country.
“We are looking at how cheaper smartphones can be introduced into the market,” Maida said.
The assurance comes as entry-level smartphones in Nigeria now often cost over ₦100,000, with many mid-range Android devices priced between ₦150,000 and above.
This high cost has been identified as a major barrier to smartphone ownership and internet access for millions of Nigerians, especially amid the prevailing economic challenges.
The NCC’s move aligns with broader industry initiatives aimed at improving device affordability to boost mobile internet penetration.
Currently, a significant portion of mobile subscriptions in Nigeria still rely on older 2G networks, while many citizens struggle to upgrade to 4G or 5G-capable smartphones.
Maida’s comments reflect the regulator’s commitment to working with stakeholders, including telecom operators and device manufacturers, to tackle affordability issues and ensure more Nigerians can participate in the digital economy.
The commission is expected to provide further details on specific strategies, such as partnerships for local assembly, subsidies, or importation incentives, in the coming weeks.
This development is seen as a welcome step towards bridging the digital divide in Nigeria.
