'We Came on Solidarity’ – Makinde Explains Turaki-led PDP’s Visit to ADC Leaders

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has clarified that the visit by the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) was purely a solidarity visit in response to ongoing political developments.

Makinde, who led the PDP delegation, spoke to journalists after a closed-door meeting that lasted late into the night at the residence of ADC factional National Chairman, Senator David Mark, in Apo, Abuja.

“We came here to visit the leadership of ADC, we are on a solidarity visit and we have seen what has been happening within the political space, the court and protest, so we came to show solidarity and to commit to a clean democratic space in our country,” the governor stated.

The high-level gathering brought together key opposition figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi, Aminu Tambuwal, former governors Babangida Aliyu and others.

Also in attendance were former Minister of Information Jerry Gana, PDP National Secretary Taofeek Arapaja, and several senior PDP and ADC chieftains.

The meeting took place hours after ADC leaders, led by Senator David Mark, staged a protest at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja over alleged partisanship in the party’s leadership crisis.

Political observers view the engagement as a significant step towards broader opposition realignment and possible coalition-building ahead of the 2027 general elections.

It further highlights the deepening divisions within the PDP, with the Turaki faction appearing more open to collaboration with other opposition platforms while the Wike-backed faction has distanced itself from such moves.

The development comes amid heightened tensions in Nigeria’s opposition politics, as various groups seek to form a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
