The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned Nigerian travellers against visa overstays, warning of broader consequences for future applicants.
In a statement shared via its X handle on Monday, the mission emphasised that adherence to U.S. immigration regulations is critical to sustaining fair and open access for legitimate travellers.
It noted that visa overstays or violations of entry conditions by individuals could negatively impact how applicants from the same country are assessed, potentially influencing future visa decisions.
“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the advisory stated. “Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.”
The mission highlighted that many Nigerians visit the United States for education, business, tourism, and family engagements, urging travellers to respect visa conditions throughout their stay.
It also raised concerns over visa fraud and the misuse of travel documents, calling on the public to help protect the integrity of the system.
According to the mission, individuals with credible information on visa fraud are encouraged to report through official consular fraud prevention channels, including AbujaFPU@state.gov and LagosFPU@state.gov.
