UNIJOS Lecturers Launch Indefinite Strike Over Unpaid March 2026 Salary

Lecturers at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) have begun an indefinite strike action following the non-payment of their March 2026 salaries.

Professor Jurbe Molwus, Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) UNIJOS branch, confirmed the development in an interview with The PUNCH on Wednesday, April 8, 2026. “We are on strike, and we are not going to work until we are paid,” Molwus stated firmly.

The industrial action took immediate effect from Wednesday, April 8, 2026. In a statement circulated to members, the union expressed deep disappointment over the persistent delay, which it attributed to the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.

The university’s bursary had already completed its processing of the salaries.

The statement read in part: “Dear comrades, after following due process, we hereby request all members to abstain from lectures, conduct of examinations and statutory meetings as our salary for the month of March 2026 is yet to be paid despite our patience.”

It further noted: “This is in line with extant NEC resolution and our standing congress resolution. The action takes immediate effect from Wednesday, April 8, 2026, until we are paid.”

The union warned that members’ patience was being taken for granted and emphasised the need for full compliance.

A strike monitoring team has been activated to enforce adherence to the directive.

This latest action highlights ongoing challenges with timely salary payments in Nigerian public universities, often linked to federal government financial processes.

Students and academic activities at UNIJOS are expected to be significantly disrupted until the salaries are released.
