UK to arraign suspected killers of 14-year-old Nigerian boy

The Metropolitan Police says it will arraign a 16-year-old boy suspected of involvement in the murder of Nigerian teenager Eghosa Ogbebor before a magistrates’ court on Saturday.

The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with Ogbebor’s murder on Friday, April 10.

The police disclosed this in a statement released on its website on Friday night.

It was earlier reported on April 3 that 14-year-old Ogbebor, a British-Nigerian, was shot dead in the Woolwich area of London, with three teenagers arrested in connection with the incident.

The Metropolitan Police had confirmed the killing, noting that officers were alerted to the shooting at about 4pm on April 2.

Police said medics who arrived at the scene made efforts to save the teenager, but he was pronounced dead.

Giving an update on the incident, the police said the 16-year-old, of Romford, was charged with murder on Friday, April 10, and would appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, April 11.

The statement added that the suspect was first arrested on April 4 but was released on bail before being re-arrested on April 9.

The statement read, “A boy has been charged with murder over the shooting of 14-year-old Eghosa Ogbebor in Woolwich.

“The 16-year-old, of Romford, was charged with murder on Friday, 10 April and will appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, 11 April.

“He was first arrested on Saturday, 4 April and released on bail. He was re-arrested on Thursday, 9 April.”

The statement added that three other suspects arrested in connection with the incident had been released on bail, while another 16-year-old had been taken into custody.

“Two boys, aged 14 and 16 and an 18-year-old man, who were arrested on Friday, 3 April in connection with Eghosa’s death, have also been bailed while inquiries continue.

“On Friday, 10 April, a further 16-year-old boy was also arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody.

“An investigation remains ongoing, and on Saturday, April 4, officers arrested a 16-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man in Woolwich on suspicion of murder. A 46-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. All three were released on bail,” it added.
