President Bola Tinubu has deferred to state governors on the fate of federal lawmakers seeking automatic tickets for the 2027 general elections.
The development comes amid growing agitation by some National Assembly members for a guaranteed return to their seats.
Sources within the ruling All Progressives Congress said the president has chosen not to impose any directive on the matter, leaving governors to decide who gets the party’s ticket in their respective states.
The move is seen as part of Tinubu’s strategy to maintain party unity and give governors significant influence over candidate selection ahead of the polls.
Party insiders say the decision could intensify lobbying among lawmakers seeking governors’ backing, while also strengthening the governors’ hold on state party structures.
The APC is expected to release further guidelines on its primary elections as preparations for 2027 gather pace.
