President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Romuald Wadagni on his landslide victory in the Beninese presidential election.
Wadagni, Benin’s Minister of Finance, secured over 94% of the votes in the election held on April 12, 2026.
In a congratulatory letter personally signed by him, President Tinubu described the outcome as a reflection of the confidence the Beninese people have in Wadagni’s vision and proven track record as Finance Minister.
“I extend my warmest congratulations to you on your election as the President of the Republic of Benin following the polls held on April 12, 2026,” Tinubu wrote. “Your victory reflects the trust the Beninese people have placed in your vision and your distinguished record of service as Minister of Finance. This transition marks a significant chapter in your nation’s history.”
Tinubu commended the people of Benin for their commitment to democracy and the peaceful conduct of the election. He also highlighted the deep historical, cultural, and cooperative ties between Nigeria and Benin.
“I look forward to working closely with your administration to further strengthen our bilateral relations, enhance regional security, and promote economic prosperity within the ECOWAS sub-region and the African Union,” Tinubu added.
Wadagni, 49, is widely seen as the anointed successor to outgoing President Patrice Talon and is expected to assume office at the end of May 2026.
