Paul Ibeh, media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has strongly accused President Bola Tinubu and INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu of colluding to destabilise Nigeria’s opposition parties and erode democratic institutions.
The allegation comes as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reportedly froze the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by former Senate President David Mark, paving the way for a rival faction.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Ibeh claimed that presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga announced Nafiu Bala as the new national chairman of the ADC, describing the move as a coordinated effort between Tinubu and INEC to annihilate the opposition.
Ibeh questioned the sudden shift, pointing out that INEC had previously filed court processes challenging Bala’s eligibility to lead the party. He asked what had changed to warrant the current recognition.
“Tinubu and Amupitan [INEC] are the ones cooking up this democratic faux pas,” Ibeh wrote. “Our message to them is that this dictatorship may live, but not for very long. Does this remind you of another era in our recent history?”
The development has heightened tensions within the opposition, with concerns growing over the stability of Nigeria’s multi-party democracy ahead of future elections.
