The Supreme Court of Nigeria on Monday held its first hearing in the long-running legal battle over the Kano Emirate and immediately adjourned proceedings to April 19, 2027.
The apex court’s decision came after counsel to the parties in the protracted dispute presented their preliminary arguments.
The matter, which has lingered in the judiciary for years, centres on the contentious creation and status of the Kano Emirate. No date was fixed for further hearings before the one-year adjournment, leaving stakeholders and observers surprised by the lengthy postponement.
The case is being closely watched across the country, as its outcome is expected to have far-reaching implications for traditional institutions and the political landscape in Kano State
