Soludo Names Bishop Kukah as Chancellor of Anambra Varsity

Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has appointed the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, as Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University.

The appointment was confirmed in a statement released Wednesday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Christian Aburime. According to the statement, Bishop Kukah is expected to leverage his global network to foster international partnerships, inspire ethical leadership at the university, and reinforce the state’s commitment to producing well-rounded graduates.

Aburime described Kukah as an eminent Nigerian intellectual and cleric whose work blends academic scholarship with the pursuit of social justice.

Academic and Professional Background

Bishop Kukah studied Philosophy and Theology at St. Augustine Major Seminary, Jos, and earned a diploma in religious studies from the University of Ibadan. He holds a bachelor’s degree in divinity from the Pontifical Urban University, Rome, a master’s in peace studies from the University of Bradford, and a Ph.D. from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), obtained in 1990. He also undertook studies at the University of Oxford and Harvard University.

Beyond academia, Kukah is a prolific author and founder of The Kukah Centre, where he leads research-driven advocacy focused on interfaith harmony and policy reform.

The state government said his appointment as Chancellor signals a drive to deepen the university’s global linkages and strengthen its values-based education.
