The Senate has directed its Committee on Health to investigate reports of a suspected COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria, over five years after the country’s last recorded cases.
The directive came during Thursday’s plenary after the Cross River State Government confirmed a COVID-19 case on Tuesday. The state Ministry of Health said it had begun contact tracing for individuals who interacted with a Chinese national admitted after testing positive for the virus.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio mandated the health committee, chaired by Senator Ipalibo Banigo, to swiftly verify the claims and report back to the Senate.
