Rainstorm Destroys Wike’s Kugbo Bus Terminal 9 Months After Commissioning

A heavy rainstorm accompanied by strong winds on Tuesday afternoon severely damaged the newly constructed Kugbo Bus Terminal in Nyanya, Abuja, just nine months after it was commissioned by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The storm, which occurred around 3:30 p.m. on April 7, 2026, ripped off sections of the terminal’s roof, sending debris onto the busy Abuja-Keffi Expressway and causing heavy traffic gridlock in the area.

The multi-billion naira facility, which was inaugurated in June 2025 and is yet to commence full operations, sustained significant structural damage. No casualties were reported, though some scavengers were seen carting away materials from the site.

In a statement, Lere Olayinka, spokesperson to Minister Wike, confirmed the incident and noted that the storm also caused minor damage to the nearby Nyanya pedestrian bridge and some surrounding buildings.

Wike has directed the immediate deployment of security personnel to the area to prevent looting and ensure free flow of traffic. He also ordered the contractor to commence repairs without delay.

The incident has sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many questioning the quality of construction of the facility.
