Police Dismiss Rumours of Threats to UTME Centres, Deploy Team Nationwide

The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed as unfounded circulating rumours of threats to Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) centres and assured the public of adequate security across all examination venues.

In a statement on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Anthony Placid, said the police were aware of “recent unfounded rumours” regarding the safety of some centres, particularly in a North Central state, but stressed that the claims had no basis.

“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to categorically state that these claims are without basis,” Placid said.He noted that while the police do not act on rumours, concerns raised by members of the public regarding the safety, education, and future of candidates have been taken seriously.

To ensure a hitch-free examination, the police have deployed extra security personnel  both overt and covert at all UTME centres nationwide. This includes routine patrols, perimeter checks, and rapid response teams at strategic locations.

Placid added that the police are collaborating with other security agencies to monitor and respond swiftly to any potential threats.“Any individual or group attempting to disrupt the examination process will be swiftly identified and brought to justice,” he warned.

The police urged candidates, parents, and the general public to remain calm, assuring them of full protection throughout the examination period.

Candidates were advised to arrive early at their centres, strictly adhere to examination guidelines, and report any suspicious activities to security personnel on site.

The Force also cautioned against the spread of unverified information on social media and encouraged the public to rely only on official updates from the police and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

The 2026 UTME is scheduled to hold from Thursday, April 16 to Saturday, April 25, 2026.
