Plateau Assembly Moves to Protect Women's Inheritance Rights

In a major step toward gender equality, the Plateau State House of Assembly and key stakeholders have thrown their weight behind a bill to guarantee women and girls the right to inherit properties.

A well-attended public hearing was held at the Assembly complex in Jos on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, where government agencies, traditional rulers, women’s groups, civil society, and security operatives expressed strong support for the proposed legislation.

The bill seeks to end discriminatory cultural practices that deny women inheritance rights from their parents and husbands, promoting fairness and social justice.

Strong Support from LawmakersHon. Kalamu Idris Gyang, Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary Matters, assured that the Assembly is determined to pass the bill into law.

“Women contribute significantly to family wealth, yet traditions deprive them of inheritance. This bill will correct that imbalance,” Gyang said.

Hon. Sylvester Wallangko, Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs, added that the law, when passed, will resolve many family disputes and become binding on all.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Social Welfare, Esther Simi Dusu, described the bill as a major tool for women’s emancipation and empowerment.

“This bill will enable women to access opportunities and express their full potential. It addresses long-standing injustice,” she noted.

The overwhelming support at the hearing signals that the bill is likely to be passed soon, marking a potential turning point for gender equality in Plateau State.
