Former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on Monday commissioned two major infrastructure projects in Bayelsa State: the Agbura–Oxbow Lake Road and the Oporoma Referral Hospital in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.
The event marks a significant milestone in Governor Douye Diri’s infrastructure drive, with Osinbajo personally inaugurating the developments.
During the commissioning of the Agbura–Oxbow Lake Road, Osinbajo praised Governor Diri for delivering transformative projects that are changing the lives of residents.
He highlighted the road’s strategic importance, noting that it links several key areas including Agbura, Swali, and communities in the Yenagoa axis, while also providing better access to the Ogbia region — home to the Federal University Otuoke and Oloibiri, the cradle of oil discovery in Nigeria.
The road further connects important government facilities such as the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) Towers, the Federal Secretariat, and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) headquarters in the state.
Recalling his 2022 visit, Osinbajo said he had initial doubts about the feasibility of the Angiama–Oporoma Bridge project due to the thick forest terrain. He expressed delight that the bridge is now completed and functional, describing Diri as “a man of his word.”
Governor Diri, while receiving Osinbajo, noted that the road construction created hundreds of jobs for youths in neighbouring communities. He added that the project has unlocked new economic opportunities through improved transportation and access to riverine areas along the Yenagoa–Oporoma–Ukubie corridor.
The governor also recalled that President Bola Tinubu had recently inaugurated the Angiama–Oporoma Bridge, and expressed appreciation that Osinbajo, who flagged off the bridge project four years ago, was present to witness its completion.
The two new projects are expected to boost connectivity, healthcare delivery, and economic activities in the oil-rich but historically underserved region.
