Olubadan Urges Tinubu to Fast-Track Establishment of State Police

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the federal government to urgently expedite the creation of state police across Nigeria.

Oba Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State, made the appeal on Monday while receiving participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) 19, 2026, from the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), Bwari, Abuja.

The visit took place at the Olubadan Palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State.According to a statement issued by the Olubadan’s Chief Press Secretary, Chief Solomon Ayoade, the traditional ruler described insecurity as the most pressing challenge currently facing the country.

He stressed that establishing state police would complement the efforts of existing security agencies and strengthen community policing initiatives.

“I call on the Federal Government to expedite action on the establishment of State Police to complement the efforts of other security agencies to ensure community policing,” Oba Ladoja said. The Olubadan emphasized that further delay in implementing state police would hinder effective responses to the worsening security situation nationwide.

The Director of Studies at NISS, Mrs. Ibrahim Halimah Zanna, who led the delegation, expressed appreciation for the warm reception despite the short notice. She disclosed that the team was in Oyo State for a one-week study tour as part of their course activities.

The push for state police has been a recurring debate in Nigeria, with proponents arguing it would enable more localized and responsive security architecture, especially amid persistent challenges like banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency.
