Former Delta State Governor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa has officially declared his intention to contest the Delta North Senatorial District seat in the 2027 general elections on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Okowa made the declaration on Monday at his residence in Asaba while hosting a high-powered delegation of political leaders from the nine local government areas that make up the Delta North senatorial district.
The delegation, led by Delta State Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, included former and serving lawmakers, government officials, and key political stakeholders. A motion urging Okowa to run was moved by former House of Representatives member Ndudi Elumelu and seconded by Hon. Nnamdi Ezechi, who represents the Ndokwa East/Ndokwa West/Ukwuani federal constituency. The motion was unanimously endorsed by the entire delegation.
The leaders described Okowa as a “seasoned administrator” and “consensus builder,” emphasising that his experience as a former senator and governor makes him the ideal candidate to effectively represent the district. In his response, Okowa expressed gratitude for the overwhelming show of support. “I feel very loved and honoured by this show of support. For the calibre of persons here and the unity of purpose demonstrated, I have no choice but to accept,” he said.
He added: “I accept your request to run for the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Delta North senatorial district. I want to reassure you that politics is a learning process; I will continue to learn on a daily basis.”
Okowa recalled the strong support he received from the Anioma people during his 2011 senatorial bid and subsequent governorship elections, promising to rely on their continued backing in 2027.In a notable moment, the former governor tendered an apology to the people of Delta North for what he described as a “mistake” in supporting the emergence of the incumbent Senator Ned Nwoko.
The development sets the stage for a potentially intense contest in Delta North ahead of the 2027 polls, as Okowa seeks a return to the Senate where he previously represented the district before becoming governor.
