The Ogun state government is set to file criminal charges against Abubakar Adamu, the driver of the stationary truck involved in the road crash that claimed the lives of Anthony Joshua’s friends last December.
During the court proceedings on Thursday, D.O Ogunyomi, Ogun
state senior counsel, took over the case involving Adeniyi Kayode, the driver
of the crashed Lexus sport utility vehicle (SUV) that was conveying Joshua and
his friends to the state.
Ogunyomi requested that the state seek to consolidate the
charges against both drivers, Adamu and Kayode, involved in the accident.
The legal advice from the Ogun Department of Public
Prosecution (DPP) was read in court.
The Ogun DPP recommended that Kayode be tried for reckless
driving, alongside the truck driver.
Olufunmilayo Somefun, the judge at the magistrate court,
approved the request for the consolidation of the charges.
The case was adjourned to June 2, 2026.
BACKGROUND
On December 29, 2025, the car conveying Joshua, a former
world heavyweight boxing champion, and two of his close associates, crashed
into a stationary truck around the Sinoma area, near Sagamu, Ogun.
The renowned boxer and three other passengers were
reportedly travelling from Lagos to Sagamu when the SUV collided with a
stationary truck parked by the roadside.
While Joshua survived the accident with minor injuries, his
close associates — Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami — died.
Ghami was Joshua’s longtime friend and his strength and
conditioning coach, while Latif served as his personal trainer.
THE CASE
The police later arrested Kayode for his role as the driver
of the SUV carrying Joshua and his deceased friends.
Subsequently, the Ogun police command filed a four-count
charge bordering on dangerous driving causing death, and reckless and negligent
driving, against Kayode.
The case was forwarded to the Ogun DPP.
During proceedings on March 17, R.D. Kadiri, counsel for the
DPP, told the court that his team had received fresh information that would be
incorporated into the case.
Kadiri had sought additional time to include the new details
in the case.
However, Abiodun Olalekan, counsel to Kayode, raised
concerns over “the delay tactics” being deployed by the prosecutor, adding that
time is being wasted.
