Ogun Court Remands 29 Suspects Over Unlawful Assembly, Violent Protest in Sagamu

A Magistrates’ Court in Sagamu has ordered the remand of 29 suspects in a correctional facility for their alleged roles in unlawful assembly and acts capable of breaching public peace.

The suspects were among 146 persons arrested by the Ogun State Police Command during its “Operation Keep Sagamu Safe”. After thorough screening, the indicted individuals were arraigned before Magistrate O. M. Somefun on April 15, 2026.

The court remanded them and adjourned the case to May 12, 2026, for further hearing.

Confirming the development, the Command’s Spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the trouble began on April 7, 2026, when commercial motorcycle riders blocked Oba Erinwole GRA Road in Sagamu, disrupting free movement of people and vehicles.

Although the riders were protesting over certain grievances, the police stated that their action violated the law.

The group later moved to the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) and TRACE office in the Sotubo area, where they disrupted activities at the Sotubo Health Centre and other public services.

Following intelligence gathering, operatives arrested 10 principal suspects who were initially charged in court.

Further raids were conducted on April 13, 2026, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun, So-Safe Corps, and Vigilante Group of Nigeria, leading to the arrest of the remaining suspects.

The Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, warned criminal elements in Sagamu and environs that there would be no hiding place for anyone intent on disturbing public peace.

“There will be no hiding place for individuals or groups intent on undermining public peace, as the full force of the law will be applied,” Ojajuni said.

He commended the various security agencies for their professionalism and appreciated the support of the Sagamu Local Council and traditional rulers.

The CP urged residents to channel grievances through lawful means and continue to cooperate with security agencies to sustain the gains of “Operation Keep Sagamu Safe”.
