Obi Urges Nigerians to Reject Tinubu Over Power Failure

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has called on Nigerians not to re-elect President Bola Tinubu in the next election, citing the persistent failure to improve electricity supply.

In a post on his X account on Saturday, April 4, 2026, Obi reminded Nigerians of Tinubu’s campaign promise during the 2023 election: “If I don’t give you constant electricity in four years, don’t vote for me for a second term.”

Obi argued that the President has failed to meet this self-imposed condition, pointing out that power generation has declined since Tinubu assumed office. He noted that when the current administration took over in 2023, Nigeria’s power supply exceeded 4,000 megawatts with relatively lower tariffs. Today, average generation has dropped below that level while electricity tariffs have increased significantly.

The former Anambra State governor highlighted Nigeria’s critically low per capita electricity consumption of 144 kilowatt-hours, compared to the African average of 617 kWh. He described this as the lowest in the world, representing less than 30% of the continental average.

Obi referenced a recent incident at Jos Airport on April 2, 2026, where President Tinubu made a brief stopover. According to Obi, the President reportedly said, “You have no light here , I fly out in ten minutes,” while condoling with families of victims of recent attacks. Obi used this to illustrate the disconnect between leaders and the daily hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians who endure prolonged power outages.

He urged citizens to reject leaders he described as lacking capacity and compassion, saying: “Now is the time to stop incompetent leaders  those lacking the capacity and compassion,  who prioritise their own comfort over the well-being of the people and make empty promises.”

Obi framed the electricity crisis as part of a larger pattern of governance failure and called on Nigerians to use future elections to demand better leadership and accountability.
