The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has elected Bala Mohammed as its new national chairman.
The move follows the resignation of Ajuji Ahmed, who was
appointed as the party’s acting national chairman in March 2024.
In a statement on Sunday, Ladipo Johnson, NNPP national
publicity secretary, said Ahmed recently joined the African Democratic Congress
(ADC).
Johnson described Mohammed, a former national organising
secretary of the party, as “an astute administrator” from Kaduna.
He said Mohammed brings “a wealth of experience, tactical
brilliance, and unwavering commitment to the party’s grassroots ideology” to
his new role.
The party raised concerns over what it described as an
“assault on democracy” ahead of the 2027 elections.
The NNPP also warned that the country is facing a “perilous
moment”, citing economic hardship, rising inflation, and insecurity.
“We are witnessing a coordinated assault on the foundations
of our democracy,” the statement reads.
The party listed “sponsored internal crises, spurious legal
challenges, and democratic erosion” as key threats.
The NNPP said Mohammed’s emergence was strategic, given the
current political climate.
The party said the new chairman is expected to consolidate
internal structures and prepare the NNPP for the next general elections.
“Our democracy is under attack, but the NNPP remains a
sanctuary for the hopes of the common man,” the party said.
The party added that it remains confident in its new
leadership, insisting it is better positioned to “offer Nigerians the
governance they truly deserve” as preparations for general election intensify.
