Nigeria Strongly Condemns Killing of Mali’s Defence Minister Sadio Camara

The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned the killing of Mali’s Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs, Lieutenant General Sadio Camara, in a terrorist attack.

Camara was killed on April 25, 2026, during coordinated terrorist assaults that targeted military sites across Mali, including a suicide car bomb attack on his residence in Kati, near the capital Bamako.

According to Malian authorities, the defence minister engaged the attackers in a firefight before sustaining fatal injuries and later succumbing to his wounds in hospital.

In a statement, Nigeria described the incident as a tragic loss and unequivocally denounced the terrorist act that claimed the life of the high-ranking Malian official.

The killing of Lt-Gen. Camara, a key figure in Mali’s military-led transitional government, has been widely viewed as a significant blow amid escalating security challenges in the Sahel region.

The attack was reportedly part of a broader wave of coordinated assaults by jihadist groups, including those linked to al-Qaeda, and separatist rebels.
