Nigeria has been named among the top 10 countries facing the most severe food crises globally, according to a new report.
The report cites conflict, insecurity, climate shocks, and economic hardship as key drivers of acute food insecurity in the country. Millions of Nigerians are estimated to be experiencing crisis-level hunger, with limited access to sufficient and nutritious food.
Northern states remain the most affected due to ongoing banditry, farmer-herder clashes, and displacement, which have disrupted farming activities and food supply chains. Inflation and high food prices have also reduced household purchasing power across the country.
The report urges urgent humanitarian assistance and long-term investment in agriculture, social protection, and peacebuilding to address the crisis. It warns that without scaled-up intervention, the food security situation could worsen in the coming months.
Other countries listed alongside Nigeria include Sudan, Yemen, Afghanistan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Federal Government has not issued an official response to the report as of press time.
