The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has strongly condemned the violent attack on two of its members at the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) of Central Hospital, Warri.
The incident occurred on Saturday, April 11, 2026, after the death of a newborn. While compassionately breaking the sad news to the bereaved father, a Senior Registrar and a House Officer were physically assaulted in what NARD described as a “barbaric and unjustifiable” reaction.
NARD said the assailant has been arrested and is in police custody. In a statement on Monday, the association condemned the rising cases of violence against healthcare workers and demanded the immediate prosecution of the attacker to serve as a deterrent.
It also called for:
Adequate security deployment in all health facilities
Comprehensive compensation and psychosocial support for the affected doctors
NARD expressed full solidarity with the two doctors and declared support for the 48-hour warning strike by doctors at Central Hospital, Warri, describing it as a legitimate demand for safety and dignity.
The association warned against any form of intimidation or victimisation of its members by hospital management or government authorities.
