Lagos east GAC backs Tokunbo Abiru’s senate return bid

Leaders of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) in the Lagos east senatorial district have endorsed Tokunbo Abiru, chairman of the senate committee on banking, insurance, and other financial institutions, for another term ahead of the 2027 general election.

Abiru was first elected to the red chamber in 2020 in a by-election, following the death of Bayo Osinowo, who was representing the district.

He was re-elected in February 2023 to represent the district in the 10th national assembly.

In a statement on Tuesday by Enitan Olukotun, his media aide, the lawmaker said the endorsement took place at the residence of Busura Adedeji Alebiosu, a GAC member and apex leader in Lagos east.

The GAC is the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos state.

The statement said the GAC lauded Abiru’s impact since his assumption of office.

According to the leaders, the decision to endorse Abiru was based on his performance, constituency projects, and legislative contributions.

They commended the senator’s consistent delivery of democratic dividends, noting that his people-centred approach to governance has significantly improved the quality of life across the district.

The statement noted that Abiru has carried out interventions across the 98 wards in the 16 LGAs and LCDAs in Lagos east.

Responding to the endorsement, Abiru appreciated the GAC for the unanimous support, describing the gesture as humbling.

“I am sincerely grateful for this overwhelming show of confidence by our revered leaders. This endorsement is not only an honour but also a call to serve with even greater dedication, integrity, and purpose,” he said.

The senator said the decision to seek re-election is aimed at consolidating his achievements and expanding development across the district.

Abiru said his public service approach is guided by discipline, transparency, and results.

The lawmaker, however, expressed gratitude to party leaders and constituents for their support, stressing the need to sustain inclusive governance, development, and unity in the district.
