Lagos Deputy Governor Hamzat Seeks Gbajabiamila’s Backing for 2027 Governorship Bid

Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and several key All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders met on Sunday, April 26, 2026, with Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, as part of early consultations ahead of the 2027 Lagos governorship election.

The delegation included prominent APC figures such as Muti Are (Secretary of the Governors’ Advisory Council), Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, Bode Oyedele, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, Adekunle Olayinka, and Hakeem Shittu (Chairman of the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board), among others.

Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, who led the discussions, stated that the group had come to solicit Gbajabiamila’s support for Hamzat’s gubernatorial ambition. He described Hamzat as deeply rooted in Lagos politics and emphasized the need for strong backing from APC leaders to secure victory in the race.

Hamzat has served as the state’s deputy governor since 2019.In his remarks, Hamzat said he visited Gbajabiamila, whom he referred to as a brother to seek advice and tap into his extensive experience for effective strategy. He stressed the importance of sustaining the APC’s organized leadership structure and maintaining the economic stability achieved under President Tinubu’s administration.

“We discussed the direction of our state and the work required to move it forward,” Hamzat posted on his X account. “It remains our shared responsibility to strengthen Lagos and continue delivering better outcomes for our people. I am focused and clear about the work ahead.”

Gbajabiamila responded positively, assuring Hamzat of his full support for the aspiration to lead Lagos State. He expressed confidence in Hamzat’s capacity, stating that “Lagos will be safe in your hands” and adding that the people of Surulere, his constituency would back the deputy governor. Gbajabiamila also noted that if a primary election becomes necessary, the APC would conduct it in line with the Electoral Act.

The meeting forms part of Hamzat’s ongoing wider consultations with APC stakeholders as positioning intensifies for the 2027 race to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

It shows efforts within the party to maintain unity and continuity in Lagos governance. This development comes amid broader APC discussions on succession in the state, with Hamzat emerging as a prominent figure in early moves toward the governorship.
