Kogi Police Confirm Kidnapping of Lagos-Abuja Bus Passengers, Rescue One Victim


The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of passengers travelling aboard a Lagos-bound Toyota Hiace bus along the Ayere–Kabba Road in Kabba Local Government Area of the state.


According to a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, the incident occurred on Monday, April 13, 2026, at about 8:30 pm when armed hoodlums flagged down the bus, attacked the passengers, and whisked them away to an unknown destination.


The police, however, did not disclose the exact number of passengers abducted, saying investigations are still ongoing to determine the figure.


CP Kankarofi stated that one victim, Adoun Julius, a 56-year-old male, was successfully rescued by security operatives. The bus, belonging to Chisco Transport Company with registration number KJA 405 YJ, was also recovered and moved to the police station for further examination.


A statement signed by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, revealed that seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the kidnapping and are currently assisting investigators.


The command said joint teams comprising police, military, and other security agencies have intensified bush-combing and search-and-rescue operations to free the remaining victims.


“Efforts have been intensified to secure the release of the remaining abducted passengers, with sustained operations currently ongoing,” the statement read.


The police urged members of the public with credible information to come forward, assuring that such information will be treated with utmost confidentiality.


Families or relatives of the abducted passengers have been advised to report to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) headquarters in Lokoja to aid identification and ongoing investigations.


CP Kankarofi reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, warning criminals to desist or face the full wrath of the law.The incident occurred as many candidates were travelling for the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
