The Jigawa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared it will field candidates for all elective positions in the 2027 general elections, while dismissing rumours of possible defections within the party.
State PDP Chairman, Prof. Babandi Gumel, gave the assurance on Sunday during a joint meeting of the State Working Committee and Local Government Chairmen at the PDP Secretariat in Dutse.
“The party will field candidates in all the elective positions during the forthcoming 2027 general elections,” Gumel stated.
He described the defection rumours especially speculation that the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Mustafa Lamido, might defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as “the handiwork of political starters who have nothing to show in the area of provision of democratic dividends to the people in Jigawa State.”
Gumel insisted the PDP remains united and strong, crediting its performance under former Governor Sule Lamido.
“PDP under the guidance, leadership and tutelage of Dr Sule Lamido is second to none to all parties in Jigawa when the issue of development of the state is being discussed,” he said.
The chairman urged local government leaders to intensify the ongoing electronic registration of members across the state in preparation for primaries.
He also announced the formation of a 13-member committee to handle the sale of nomination forms and the screening of aspirants, directing interested individuals to contact the committee at the PDP secretariat in Dutse.
Gumel added that the party is actively repositioning itself to compete effectively and reclaim power at all levels in 2027.
The PDP’s declaration comes as political activities intensify ahead of the next election cycle, with the party aiming to counter perceptions of weakness amid the rumours. No immediate reaction has been reported from the ruling APC in Jigawa State.
