Iran has agreed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for safe passage for a period of two weeks, conditional on the halting of attacks by the United States and Israel.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced the move on Tuesday night, stating that Tehran would also suspend its defensive operations if attacks against the country cease.
“If attacks against Iran are halted, our powerful armed forces will cease their defensive operations,” Araghchi said.
He added: “For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces and with due consideration of technical limitations.”
The agreement comes amid heightened tensions in the region and follows diplomatic efforts, including appeals from Pakistan, to de-escalate the conflict.
The two-week window is seen as a temporary ceasefire to allow for further negotiations.
