‘I’m troublesome but learning every day’ — Funke Akindele speaks on flaws

Funke Akindele, the award-winning filmmaker, has opened up about her personality and approach to relationships.

In a recent interview on The Morayo Show, Akindele admitted that while she isn’t entirely proud of her tendency to cut people off, she is learning to strike a balance.

Asked about how she navigates relationships, the actress responded by crediting actor Uzee Usman for helping her gain a new perspective.

She also recalled how he advised her to be more accommodating as a leader rather than shutting people out.

“I am not proud of that but I am proud of it. There must be a balance and I thank God for someone like Uzee Usman in my life. There was a day Uzee sat my down when I complaining about some people’s behaviors,” she said.

“He was like ‘number one, you are a leader, you have to accept people for who they are. It is not every door you have to close, you will just leave them and put them in their place’. And for the first time I sat down, I was quiet and I said it is true.”

The filmmaker also described herself as someone who loves deeply while acknowledging her flaws.

She noted that although relationships remain important to her, she is continuously learning and prioritizing her well-being.

“I am an extremist, I love so hard. I am real, I am not perfect, I can be troublesome. I am tough, if I want you to do something… When my mum was alive, she used say ‘Funke, everybody cannot be like you. Everybody cannot be as smart or as fast you, calm down. It is good but calm down’,” she added.

“So human relationship for me is very important and I am learning everyday but note, no matter what happens my mental health is my priority and you know I am getting older.”

Akindele’s recent comments come amid public attention following a tense encounter with fellow actress Toyin Abraham.

The incident occurred on Sunday at the premiere of The Return of Arinzo, a film by Iyabo Ojo.

During the event, Abraham approached Akindele to greet her, but Akindele kept her gaze elsewhere, ignoring the gesture.

Abraham then turned to greet Ojo before walking away from the table.
