The acting National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nafiu Bala, has claimed he was deceived into attending the ceremony where leadership of the party was handed over to former Senate President David Mark.
Bala made the allegation during an interview with AIT News on Monday, April 20, 2026, while reacting to reports that he was present at the event where Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola were installed as interim National Chairman and Secretary respectively.
According to Bala, he was invited by the former ADC Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, under the pretext that the July 2025 event was only for the adoption of new coalition members into the party. He said he only realised the true purpose of the gathering after it had started.
“I was tricked to attend the handing-over ceremony to David Mark. Ralph told me that it was just adoption of new members for the coalition movement,” Bala stated.“But on the same day, Nwosu announced his resignation, and on the same day, he announced David Mark and other excos.”
Bala, who was the party’s Deputy National Chairman at the time, insisted he had no prior knowledge of the leadership change and did not support it. He said he consulted widely with other National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Committee (NEC) members before taking action.
He revealed that he later wrote to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declaring himself as the authentic acting National Chairman, adding that the party also approached the court after due consultations.
Bala further claimed that INEC informed him that he had resigned his position as Deputy National Chairman, describing it as part of the deception. As of the time of filing this report, neither Ralph Nwosu nor the Mark-led faction had responded to Bala’s allegations.
The crisis in the ADC has deepened, with three rival factions, loyal to David Mark, Nafiu Bala (Gombe), and Dumebi Kachikwu, laying claim to the party’s leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC has since derecognised the Mark-led leadership following a court ruling and stated it will not monitor the party’s activities until the leadership dispute is resolved by the Federal High Court.
