‘I cried’ – Italy’s Donnarumma on not making it to World Cup

Italy’s captain Gianluigi Donnarumma expressed deep disappointment after the national team failed to secure a place at the 2026 World Cup.

The Azzurri suffered a crushing defeat in the play-offs, missing out on the tournament for the third consecutive time.

The goalkeeper shared his personal anguish and the collective sadness felt by the team, acknowledging the frustration and heartbreak of fans across the country.

Despite the setback, he stressed the importance of resilience and moving forward with determination.

“Last night, after the match, I cried,” Donnarumma wrote. “I cried out of disappointment for not having been able to take Italy to where it deserves to be. I cried for the immense sadness I am feeling, together with the entire Azzurri group of which I am proud to be captain, and I know, in this moment, you are feeling it too, fans of our National Team.”

The veteran goalkeeper urged fans and teammates alike to find the courage to move forward. “After such a great disappointment, we must find the courage to turn the page, once again. Always believing, that is the engine to move forward. Because life rewards those who give everything, without holding back.”

Italy’s hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup ended in a penalty shoot-out loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday, meaning the team will miss the finals in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Donnarumma emphasized the need to start anew: “Together. Once again. To bring Italy back to where it deserves to be.”
