Gunmen attacked several villages in Kebbi on Tuesday, killing dozens of residents and setting houses ablaze.
A source told TheCable that the attacks occurred in
Shabanda, Debebe, and Shaffaci, as well as in nearby communities, with no fewer
than 40 people reportedly killed.
“They are setting fire on people’s houses, food and killing
those they meet,” the source said.
“From the account I received yesterday, almost 40 persons
were killed. We have over 490 persons who have run to our parish in Yauri.”
Reuters reported similar attacks across villages in
neighbouring Niger state, where armed men killed at least 20 people, including
security guards, while abducting an unspecified number of residents.
The attack occurred in Shiroro LGA. Residents said the
assailants operated for hours, destroying homes and overwhelming security
personnel.
Many villagers were said to have fled to nearby towns such
as Gwada, Zumba, and Galadima Kogo for safety.
Wasiu Abiodun, public relations officer of the Niger state
police command, confirmed that gunmen invaded Bagna and Erena villages on
Tuesday.
According to the spokesperson, two community guards and a
driver were killed, while others sustained injuries.
