Gov.Oborevwori Boosts Doctors’ Salaries with ₦200,000 Increase, Tax-Free Allowances

In a bold move to strengthen the state’s healthcare sector and stem the tide of medical professionals migrating abroad, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has approved a significant salary review for doctors.

The governor approved an additional ₦200,000 monthly increase in doctors’ salaries, alongside a ₦100,000 tax-free allowance specifically for house officers. This forms part of the administration’s “MORE Special Allowance” initiative.

Announcing the approval on Tuesday, Delta State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, explained that the package is a direct response to the ongoing Japa syndrome (mass emigration of skilled professionals) that has left many hospitals understaffed.

New Salary Structure

Entry-level doctors: Their monthly salary rises from ₦370,000 to ₦570,000.

House officers: Will now earn above ₦350,000 (up from over ₦250,000), thanks to the extra ₦100,000 tax-free allowance.

Dr. Onojaeme noted that despite receiving thousands of applications for over 700 health worker positions recently advertised by the state, the response from doctors was disappointingly low — a situation he attributed to better opportunities elsewhere.“Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has approved ₦200,000 tax-free for all doctors in Delta State. As you know, the Japa syndrome is one of the major challenges we are facing in the health sector,” the Commissioner said.

The salary enhancement is part of Governor Oborevwori’s broader efforts to reposition the health sector under his MORE Agenda (an acronym for Meaningful Development). The state government is also recruiting additional medical and non-medical personnel to fill critical gaps in hospitals across the 25 local government areas.

This development has been welcomed by stakeholders in the health sector, with many describing it as a timely intervention that could help retain talent and improve healthcare delivery in the state.

The new remuneration package takes immediate effect, according to government sources.
