FIFA has announced that yellow cards accumulated in the group stage will be wiped off going into the knockout rounds.
The rule change was proposed at FIFA’s ruling council on
Tuesday, and the world football governing body confirmed the change.
The rule will come into effect at the 2026 World Cup in the
US, Mexico, and Canada.
Yellow cards were previously accumulated and bans received
accordingly until the quarter-final stage, where subsequent bookings are wiped
off. The new rule tweak will ensure fewer players miss crucial matches in the
knockout phase of the World Cup.
Speaking on the approved rule change, FIFA said the decision
was due to the expanded format of the 48-nation World Cup that will include a
round of 32 after the group stage. The body also explained that players who
receive yellow cards in the group phase will not serve suspension at the start
of the knockout rounds. Also, players who receive a single yellow card will
have it cancelled after the quarter-finals, to ensure they do not miss the
final showpiece.
“Reflective of the expanded format with an extra knockout
round, the FIFA Council confirmed an amendment to the regulations for the FIFA
World Cup 2026 whereby single yellow cards in the final competition will be
cancelled after the group stage and then again after the quarterfinals.”
The 2026 World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19,
with Mexico and South Africa facing off at the Aztecs’ stadium in the opening
match of the quadrennial tournament.
