The federal government says more than 25 of the 65 ambassador-designates nominated by President Bola Tinubu have secured approval from their host countries.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Friday, Kimiebi
Ebienfa, spokesperson of the ministry of foreign affairs, said the development
marks progress in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to fill diplomatic postings across
its global missions.
“We have received agreements from over 25 countries where
ambassador-designates have been sent. We are receiving agreements every day,
and before the date of induction, we will receive even more,” PUNCH quoted
Ebienfa as saying.
He said the ministry is preparing to commence a three-day
induction programme scheduled to be held from April 27 to 29 for the
ambassador-designates, after which formal postings will begin.
Ebienfa said the approval, known in diplomatic practice as
agrément, represents the consent granted by receiving countries after due
consideration of nominated envoys.
He said the process is ongoing, noting that approvals are
still being received from additional host countries.
The spokesperson added that the induction programme will
expose the ambassador-designates, and in some cases their spouses, to
diplomatic conduct, protocol, and expectations of representing Nigeria abroad.
Ebienfa also addressed concerns about possible rejection of
nominees, saying all ambassador-designates will ultimately be posted to foreign
missions.
He noted that Nigeria has more than 70 diplomatic missions
globally, adding that unfilled positions allow flexibility for reassignment
where necessary.
The ministry spokesperson also warned against the illegal
use of diplomatic titles, describing such practice as a criminal offence.
