‘Fake News from Nigeria’ — Donald Trump Blasts CNN Over Iran Ceasefire Report

US President Donald Trump has accused CNN of reporting a “false statement” from Iran — allegedly picked up from a Nigerian news outlet — on the ceasefire reached last night.

The deal was announced roughly two hours before Trump’s deadline to destroy Iranian “civilisation”.

“The enemy, in its unfair, unlawful, and criminal war against the Iranian nation, has suffered an undeniable, historic, and crushing defeat,” CNN reported, quoting a statement from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) in the wake of the ceasefire deal.

According to the statement, the security council said Iran achieved great victory and forced the US to accept its 10-point plan.

Trump kicked against the statement in a Truth Social post.

“The alleged Statement put out by CNN World News is a FRAUD, as CNN well knows,” he said.

He added that the “false Statement was linked to a Fake News site (from Nigeria) and, of course, immediately picked up by CNN, and blared out as a “legitimate” headline”.

Trump did not name the “Fake News site” from Nigeria and did not provide evidence for his claims.

In a separate post, the president claimed the outlet “was a new, trouble making site from Nigeria”.

Trump posted a statement from Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister, as the country’s official statement.

He ordered CNN to withdraw the reportage, adding that authorities have commenced investigations to determine whether the “terrible” reporting was a crime or not.

MULTIPLE STATEMENTS FROM IRAN

After the ceasefire between the US and Iran was announced, Araghchi thanked Pakistan for its mediation efforts.

“If attacks against Iran are halted, our Powerful Armed Forces will cease their defensive operations,” Araghchi said.

“For a period of two weeks, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be possible via coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces and with due consideration of technical limitations.”

The foreign minister said he made the statement on behalf of the SNSC.

Iran’s SNSC is the primary body tasked with overseeing Iran’s national security interests and protecting its Islamic revolution. It is stacked with senior figures from the country’s security, military, and clerical establishment.

Tasnim, a news agency run by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), published a statement issued by the SNSC with excerpts from the CNN report.

“The enemy has suffered an undeniable, historic and crushing defeat in its cowardly, illegal and criminal war against the Iranian nation,” the statement reads.

The SNSC added that “Iran achieved a great victory and forced the criminal America to accept its 10-point plan”, congratulating Iranians on the “victory”.

Brendan Carr, chairman of the US Federal Communications Commission, threatened that broadcasters would lose their licences if they fail to operate in public interest.

CNN defended its report, saying the statement was obtained from Iranian officials and reported on multiple Iranian state media outlets.
