EPL: United edge Brentford to stay third in race for UCL spot

Casemiro and Benjamin Sesko were the goal scorers as Manchester United defeated Brentford 2-1 in their English Premier League encounter at Old Trafford Stadium on Monday.

The duo proved clinical for the Red Devils on a night when Brentford’s finishing ability deserted them, allowing Michael Carrick’s side to take all three points.

Liverpool have improved in recent weeks, and Aston Villa have hung on to remain in the race for a top-four finish; United knew a slip-up could be fatal to their UEFA Champions League ambition, and they dealt with the situation efficiently.

They flew out of their traps early on with Amad Diallo testing the goalkeeper and having a goal ruled out for offside, but the opener did not take long to arrive, with Casemiro heading home Harry Maguire’s knock-on from a Bruno Fernandes corner kick in the 11th minute for 1-0.

The visitors found a way back into the game and threatened the home side, who doubled their lead two minutes from halftime through Sesko. The Slovenian slotted home Bruno Fernandes’ pass for 2-0, with the Portuguese just one assist away from equaling the record for number of assists in an EPL season.

Brentford continued to threaten and created gilt-edged chances, but Igor Thiago and Danjo Ouattara were wasteful in attack as Man United survived near-certain goal scenarios. They, however, conceded the consolation goal three minutes from the end of the match with an excellent Mathias Jensen curling shot into the top corner from the edge of the area.

This set up a nail-biting anxiety for the home fans in the five minutes of added time, but the players delivered on the pitch to secure all three points and a fifth consecutive win over the Bees.

Man United remain third with a three-point advantage over both Liverpool and Aston Villa. Brentford saw their run of five consecutive draws punctured by United, and they remain in ninth position, with their European dream fading.
