Former presidential media aide Bashir Ahmad alleged on April 1, 2026, that American Christian missionary Alex Barbir (sometimes spelled Babir) has been instructed by Nigerian authorities to leave the country.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Ahmad described Barbir as a “hate monger” and accused him of attempting to ignite religious tensions in communities across Nigeria’s North-Central region, particularly in areas affected by ongoing violence such as Plateau State.
Ahmad wrote: “A reliable source has informed me that the hate monger, Mr. Alex Barbir, has been ordered by the authorities to leave this country. Since arriving in Nigeria, he has been attempting to ignite religious tensions, particularly in communities he visited across the North Central region. Our nation’s peace and unity must never be compromised and anyone found promoting division should be held accountable.”
As of April 2, 2026, there has been no official confirmation from the Nigerian Immigration Service, the Ministry of Interior, or the Presidency regarding any deportation or expulsion order.
The claim remains unverified and is based solely on Ahmad’s statement citing an unnamed “reliable source.”
Background
Alex Barbir, founder of the humanitarian organization Building Zion, has been working in Nigeria’s Middle Belt (including Benue and Plateau States). He has focused on providing aid, rebuilding homes for displaced communities affected by attacks, and highlighting violence against predominantly Christian farming villages.
