Prominent opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and former Sokoto State Governor Senator Aminu Tambuwal, along with other leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), are currently meeting at the Yar'Adua Centre in Abuja.
The high-profile gathering is in preparation for a press conference addressing the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) recent decision to remove Senator David Mark as the party's National Chairman and delist members of the ADC's National Working Committee (NWC) from its official portal.
INEC announced it would no longer recognize or engage with either the David Mark-led faction or the rival group led by Rafiu Bala, citing a Court of Appeal judgment from March 12, 2026, which directed the commission to maintain the status quo ante bellum (the situation before the leadership dispute) pending the resolution of the matter at the Federal High Court.
The commission stated that names uploaded to its portal on September 9, 2025 including those of David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola (as National Secretary) would be removed.
INEC further clarified it would cease accepting correspondences from both factions and would not monitor any party meetings, congresses, or conventions until the court case is decided.
This development comes shortly after Kwankwaso formally defected from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ADC, with Atiku, Obi, Tambuwal, and others publicly welcoming him in a show of unity aimed at building a strong opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The ADC has emerged as a potential platform for these leaders following internal crises in their previous parties.Sources indicate the leaders first convened at Atiku Abubakar's residence before proceeding to the Yar'Adua Centre.
The press conference is expected to outline the coalition's position on INEC's action and chart a way forward for the party amid the leadership tussle.
The crisis stems from a legal challenge by Rafiu Bala, who contested the emergence of the Mark-led caretaker committee.
Political observers view INEC's stance as a significant setback for the opposition alliance, which has been positioning the ADC as a viable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
