The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has urged the Senate to declare the seat of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South, vacant following his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The party made the call during a press briefing in Umuahia on Thursday, led by former Abia State House of Assembly member Obinna Ichita.
APGA insisted that Senator Abaribe voluntarily resigned from the party and was not expelled, contrary to his claim before the Senate.
“The senator resigned in his ward. He did so voluntarily, which is his right. However, if you leave the party that gave you the platform for another party when there is no leadership crisis, that seat must be declared vacant,” the party stated.
APGA leaders advised Abaribe to honourably vacate his seat to avoid national embarrassment and urged the Senate to invoke relevant constitutional provisions on defection.
Senator Abaribe had earlier announced his move to the ADC on the floor of the Senate, sparking debate over the legality of the defection under Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution, which requires lawmakers to vacate their seats if they defect without a division or crisis in their original party.
The controversy continues as both APGA and the Senate weigh the next steps regarding the Abia South senatorial seat.
