The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused the African Democratic Congress (ADC) of spawning conspiracy theories in the wake of its leadership crisis.
On Thursday, David Mark, national chairman of the ADC,
accused President Bola Tinubu of attempting to destroy opposition political
parties in Nigeria.
Mark was reacting to an announcement by the Independent
National Electoral Commission (INEC) that it would no longer recognise the
factions of the ADC led by Mark and Nafiu Bala after reviewing a court of
appeal judgment.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Felix Morka, APC national
publicity secretary, said the ADC is responsible for the problems confronting
it.
Morka said the ADC had distinguished itself as a promoter of
“rabid conspiracy theories” about alleged attempts by the APC to undermine the
party.
“Quite apart from being an assembly of Nigeria’s most
confused and desperate politicians, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has
distinguished itself as a peddler of rabid conspiracy theories about what the
All Progressives Congress (APC) is or is not doing to undermine the party,” the
statement reads.
He described the ADC as a party destined to collapse due to
its internal contradictions.
“The ADC is a party that never was. By design, it was a
kamikaze contraption with a ‘follow-come’ self-destructive detonator. It had to
unravel and now unraveling fast by installment,” he added.
Morka said the crisis began when the party’s factional
leadership allegedly assumed control of the party in violation of its
constitution.
“When its factional leadership under the duo of David Mark
and Rauf Aregbesola parachuted into the party like thoughtless and planless
commandos, and hijacked the party in violent violation of its constitutional
stipulations regarding leadership succession, and in disregard of the rule of
law, the ADC set its own date with destiny,” he said.
The APC spokesperson added that INEC’s decision to
de-recognise the Mark-led faction is lawful.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC’s)
decision to de-recognize the factional David Mark-led executives in compliance
with judgment of court, is valid in law, justified in fact, and consistent with
electoral policy and democratic practice,” he said.
“It is the consequence of the Party’s reckless and desperate
misadventure.”
Morka said it is irresponsible for the ADC to blame the APC
for the crisis within its ranks.
“It is therefore highly escapist and irresponsible for the
ADC to blame the APC for its internal woes of which they are the sole
architects,” he said.
He added that the ADC’s inability to manage its internal
affairs shows it cannot offer a credible alternative to Nigerians.
“The ADC’s unwillingness to take responsibility for its
miserable failure to follow due process, order its internal affairs, and manage
its self-inflicted crisis makes ADC grossly unfit as a platform to be taken
seriously by Nigerians,” he said.
“A party that cannot fix itself cannot possibly fix
Nigeria.”
Morka said the ADC has focused more on attacking the APC
than presenting ideas to Nigerians.
“The ADC has absolutely nothing to offer more than its
senseless attacks against the APC,” he said.
“Attacking the APC seems to be its cardinal commitment and
manifesto. It is a party bereft of ideas and lost in vain desperation for
power.”
He added that the APC remains focused on good governance
under the Tinubu administration.
“Our great Party and the administration of President Bola
Tinubu remain steadfast in delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda, and
strengthening democratic institutions for peace, unity and prosperity of all
Nigerians,” the statement added.
