A former governor of Nasarawa State, Tanko Al-Makura, has criticised Governor Abdullahi Sule for naming Senator Aliyu Wadada as his preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship election without wider consultation.
Speaking in a video shared on X by @NigAffairs, Al-Makura
made it clear he was not involved in the decision.
When asked whether the governor consulted him, he responded:
“Do you want a yes or no answer?”
He then gave a direct reply: “no.”
Al-Makura also argued that it is too early for the governor
to be promoting a preferred candidate, especially at the level of engaging the
President.
He stressed that the selection of a governorship candidate
should be left to a transparent party process, urging the All Progressives
Congress (APC) to conduct primaries rather than impose a choice.
Governor Sule had earlier announced Wadada as his preferred
successor during a meeting with political appointees and heads of government
agencies at the Government House in Lafia.
The move signals early political positioning ahead of the
2027 general elections.
He recently defected from the Social Democratic Party (SDP)
to the APC, a move widely linked to his governorship ambition.
Meanwhile, the endorsement has already sparked internal
competition within the APC. Former Inspector-General of Police, Abubakar Adamu,
has rejected the idea that Sule’s backing amounts to a final decision,
insisting he will contest for the governorship ticket.
Governor Sule has maintained that, in the interest of
fairness and equity, the governorship position should be zoned to Nasarawa
West, a position that appears to support Wadada’s candidacy but continues to
draw mixed reactions within the party.
