Adeyanju to Tinubu : Stop Anti-Democratic Forces From Foisting One-Party State on Nigeria

Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju has urged President Bola Tinubu to immediately check what he calls anti-democratic elements within and around his administration that are allegedly trying to weaken opposition parties and turn Nigeria into a one-party state ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a strongly worded statement, Adeyanju called on the president to restrain individuals and groups using institutions like the courts to frustrate opposition parties and block them from fielding candidates in future polls.

“I call on the President to urgently rein in all anti-democratic forces operating within and around his government, including those using the courts to frustrate the opposition and prevent them from fielding candidates in the 2027 general elections,” Adeyanju said.

He warned that advisers pushing the narrative that a strong opposition threatens Tinubu’s re-election chances are actually working against the president’s long-term interests.“The President must recognise that those advising him that a strong opposition threatens his chances of re-election are, in fact, his greatest enemies,” he added.

Adeyanju expressed particular concern over what he described as deliberate and sustained efforts to destabilize major opposition parties, starting with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and now targeting the African Democratic Congress (ADC).“The sustained efforts to weaken opposition parties, first the PDP and now the ADC, raise serious concerns about an emerging attempt to impose a one-party state. Such actions pose a grave threat to Nigeria’s democracy and long-term stability, and risk undermining public confidence in our democratic institutions,” he stated.

The activist also appealed to former presidents and other respected statesmen to speak up against any moves that could erode democratic pluralism.“I also call on all former Presidents and statesmen to rise to this moment and speak out. This is a defining time for our democracy, and all well-meaning Nigerians must stand firmly against any attempt to erode pluralism and democratic choice,” Adeyanju said.

The statement comes amid ongoing political realignments and defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the country prepares for the next general elections.
