Youths of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are set to hold protests today at offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos, Ogun, and Jigawa states as part of the ongoing #AmupitanMustGo campaign.
Balarabe Rufai, the party’s national youth leader, announced the action in a post on X on Monday, sharing flyers for the Lagos and Ogun protests, both codenamed ‘Operation Occupy INEC’.
According to the announcement, the Lagos protest is scheduled to begin at 8am at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), while the Ogun protest will kick off at 11am at the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) office in Abeokuta. Details for the Jigawa protest were not specified in the post.
The protests are part of a broader push by ADC youths demanding the immediate resignation of INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, and the restoration of the Senator David Mark-led national leadership of the party.
Rufai had earlier revealed that ADC youths had previously occupied the INEC office in Lagos, carrying placards and calling for respect for the rule of law and due process in the party’s leadership crisis.
“This is a call for accountability, not chaos. When institutions fail to act with fairness, citizens have a duty to respond with courage and clarity. The demand is simple: restore integrity or step aside,” he stated.
The demonstrations follow a similar ‘Occupy INEC’ protest staged in Abuja on April 8 by prominent opposition figures including Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, Rotimi Amaechi, Peter Obi, Rauf Aregbesola, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Dino Melaye.
The crisis escalated after INEC withdrew recognition of the David Mark-led ADC faction on April 1, citing a Court of Appeal judgment that ordered the maintenance of the status quo in the party’s internal leadership dispute.
The ADC youths have accused INEC of partisanship in the matter.
