ADC Strengthens Ranks as Former Senator Kabiru Gaya Defects from APC

In a significant political development, former Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, who represented Kano South, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

In a resignation letter dated April 5, 2026, addressed to the APC Ward Chairman in Gaya Local Government Area, Gaya announced his immediate exit from the party.

The defection comes days after Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the APC’s 2023 governorship candidate in Kano, also dumped the party and joined the ADC.

Gawuna subsequently met with the leader of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.Gaya said his decision was reached after “careful reflection and wide consultation,” stressing that it serves the best interest of his constituents and aligns with his personal convictions.

“I extend my sincere gratitude to the party for the platform it provided me and for the cooperation and camaraderie extended over the years,” he wrote.

The letter was formally acknowledged by the Gaya Arewa Ward Chairman, Adam A. Adam.

Confirming his move to the ADC, Gaya said he maintains a cordial relationship with both Dr. Kwankwaso and Gawuna.

He reflected on his eight years in the APC, noting that while the party was founded on strong principles and performed well initially, it has since deviated.

“APC was founded on good principles, but it has now deviated. For good eight years, APC was on track. Insecurity is now everywhere. During Buhari’s tenure, insecurity was only in the northeast, now it’s all over the country,” Gaya stated.

The latest defection further weakens the APC’s structure in Kano and boosts the growing momentum of the ADC in the state ahead of future elections.
