Members and supporters of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Tuesday staged a protest at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Rivers State.
The protesters, who carried placards and chanted solidarity songs, were expressing grievances over recent developments in the party and INEC’s handling of ADC’s internal matters.
According to eyewitnesses, the group demanded that INEC respect the court judgment barring it from recognizing state congresses conducted by committees appointed by the David Mark-led caretaker leadership of the party.
Leaders of the protest said they were at the INEC office to ensure the commission complies with the Federal High Court ruling that affirmed the authority of the party’s State Executive Committees to conduct congresses.
Security operatives were present to maintain order as the protest remained peaceful. INEC officials in Rivers had yet to issue an official response at the time of filing this report.
