Abbas’ Aide Defects to ADC, Eyes Kaduna South Senate Seat Ahead of 2027

In a significant political shift as parties gear up for the 2027 general elections, Godfrey Gaiya, Special Assistant on Political Matters (North West) to Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, has defected from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Gaiya, who previously served as Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, announced his move in an exclusive interview with PUNCH Online on Thursday, April 2, 2026. He declared his intention to contest the Kaduna South Senatorial District seat under the ADC platform.

“My decision to join the ADC was carefully considered. It reflects consultations with my supporters and constituents who desire a credible alternative that prioritises people’s welfare, peace, and development,” Gaiya stated.

He framed the defection as a principled choice rather than one driven by personal issues, noting that the ADC offers a fresh platform for Nigerians tired of “politics of exclusion and unfulfilled promises.” According to him, running for the Senate would enable him to tackle socio-economic challenges in his constituency more effectively.

Gaiya expressed appreciation to the APC leadership for previous opportunities but emphasised that the future of democracy depends on stronger institutions and more inclusive political spaces.

As of press time, attempts to get reactions from the APC or the Speaker’s office were unsuccessful.Political analysts view Gaiya’s exit as an early sign of realignment ahead of 2027, with various actors in Kaduna State repositioning themselves.

Kaduna South has long been considered an APC stronghold, so the move could influence dynamics in the district and contribute to wider shifts among lawmakers and aides seeking stronger electoral prospects.

This development fits into a larger pattern of defections and party repositioning across Nigeria as the next election cycle approaches.
